A Kilowatt-Hour (kWh) is the typical way energy is measured. One kilowatt hour refers to the use of a device or set of devices that uses 1,000 watts for an hour. For example, a 100 watt lightbulb running for 10 hours would use 1 kilowatt-hour (kWh).
Electric utilities typically charge their customers for their kilowatt-hour usage and the rate tends to fluctuate over time and also varies by region. For example, the average cost per kilowatt-hour in Washington may be 5.7 cents whereas the average in Hawaii may be 16.34 cents.
